July 29-Aug 1

July 29-Aug 1: Parentology, DrumsGirlsDangerousPie, From Dead to Worse and a book that highly offended me

I read a book this week that completely in every way offended me. Pushed me to the edge. Made me angry, sad, frustrated, and worried/concerned for people, like the author, that believe and profess the same dogma/propaganda.

It's good to read things that offend you. I often tell students and teachers that a good library has something to offend everyone. We live in a great country where everyone is allowed to have their own opinions and feelings about everything--and they can write about it.

I choose to take this experience and use it for the positive. Boundaries need to be set. How I feel needs to be considered. I have to move on with things and not let it affect me so much that I cannot get beyond it.

Students when you read something that you do not like or agree, as far as your personal beliefs or ideas are concerned, can you use that as a positive or negative experience? The choice is up to you.

July 20-22

July 20-22: Followers by Davies, Eight Keys by LaFleur and Flight by

I am slowly making my way through the Golden Sower list this summer.  I know...its almost the end of the July.  School starts in like three weeks...but Golden Sowers have not been top priority this summer for me.  Not sure why.  Of course I still have three I didn't read from last year's list as well.  Maybe I get to them, maybe I don't

In the middle of Prisoner B-3087 by Alan Gratz.  Pretty amazing account.  Pretty sad account.

Had the library opened today for students to check out books this summer.  I have one more week to be open.  I will be reflecting about what I thought about this little summer project starting next week.

July 4th

July 4: I had a fantastic reading morning. Graphic Novels - Chickenhare, Missle Mouse, The Silversix, MS Worse than Meatloaf & Eighth Grade is Making Me Sick. Not to mention I also read half of another Sookie Stackhouse book. Happy 4th of July!

It was truly a relaxing morning with great results that affect my students. They have loved these graphic novels and now I know what to suggest and how to suggest them.

Been thinking a lot about how I am going to use what I have done this summer with students. More on this to come but I am also working out how to use "Reading in the Wild" and "Book Love" as a part of what I do on a daily basis with kids.

June 27-July 3

June 27-July 1:  Continued a new series that I bought for my students at the library.

#bookaday July 2-3 Mal and Chad Series feels a little like Calvin and Hobbs but lovable.

So my total at this point of amount of books read this summer is roughly 55. That's how many I read all school year last year!  I have a pile at home waiting for me.

Here's the funny thing about all this...every time I go into my library or the public library I walk out with 5-8 books.

June 26th

June 26th: Coraline (graphic novel). I'm not sure why I have not read this book yet because I would have read it in ms.

This book is freaky, freaky! I would have totally picked something like this in middle school. The fake parents with button eyes are enough for nightmares that is for sure. This might lead to the reading of the chapter book as well. I can only imagine the imagining from the words is even more creepy.

Still working on Clash of Kings (book 2 of Game of Thrones) and the 6th installment of the Stookie Stackhouse series.

Needless to say. I am reading. Reading everyday, many pages at a time. Making room for reading is so important. Reading faster even after 30 some days of summer.

June 25th

June 25th:  Finished up the Amulet series today.  So glad that I read these books finally.  Can see why my students like them.

Tuesday, June 24, 2014

June 21-24th

So from Saturday to today (Tuesday) I was able to get a little reading done. I am working on the Amulet series which is super popular with my students and it was about time that I read it. I am working through the John Green books this summer as well.

Over Sunday and Monday I also was still listening to Game of Thrones book 2. Over half way done with that.

June 19 & 20

#bookaday June 19 & 20: Little Red Lies & My Beautiful Broken Shell

Little Red Lies is a historical fiction with more realistic situations in it than history.

My Beautiful Broken Shell a little inspirational book that makes you remember that even when something is broken in your life you still have value.

June 18

@vogtteacherlib: #bookaday June 18: Slaughterhouse 5. Hmmm.

So this is one that some high schools require for reading. I've never read it before this summer. I took it as a recommendation from a Vlogbrothers posting a couple of weeks ago.

You take it for what it is. Intriguing. Strange. Meaning hard to grasp. I need a couple stays to think about this one.

June 14

June 14th:  #bookaday  Issac's Storm by Erik Larson

This is my first non-fiction book for the summer.  After reading Reading in the Wild I realized that I wished that my students would read more non-fiction books.  How do I get them to do that?  Well it can't hurt me reading a few non-fiction books from time to time.

While in Houston, last March I bought this book based on a suggestion from my father-in-law.  Since I am back in Houston I thought it would be a perfect time to read a book about the 1900 Galveston Hurricane.  The science of weather has always been interesting to me since I spent nine years teaching Earth Science.  This book had so many tragic human stories and so many intriguing science stories.

Very glad to add this to my list for #bookaday.

June 13th

June 13th: Interview with the Vampire: Claudia's Story (Graphic Novel) Just as haunting as the original and the movie.

My graphic novel frenzy continues. There is something about a graphic novel that I just love. The details in both the graphics and the words. What is interesting is that I have to stop myself and look at the pictures because I am such a "word" person.

June 12th

June 12th: The Sookie Stackhouse continues with "Dead As a Doornail" by Charlaine Harris Better than the show!

This is number 5 of the series. I am loving the details about the characters. It continues to not disappoint as far as vampires, werewolves and other "sups (supernatural beings)."

I know, I know. The goals was to read the Game of Throne series this summer…there is still time.

June 10th

Okay so we listened to Game of Thrones Book 2 today from 11am-6pm (Still not finished).  I did finish Papertowns by John Green--Spencer asked me, "is it better than TFIOS?"  My response, "not better just different."

Traveling with a big bag of books.  Looking forward to the next couple days of pool time and reading time.

Only was able to make it through part of the box today.

It's really important to start reading early.

June 6th

#bookaday June 6th: Dead to the World I love vampire and werewolf books. #4 in the Sookie Stackhouse mysteries.

I have always loved books with vampires and werewolves. This is a great "easy" read series that always has some crazy twists and turns.

June 5th

#bookaday June 5th: Finally finished 1984 today!  Can't wait to discuss with book club June 30th.

This book is a must read. The themes in it are so very dark. It's amazing to think a man predicting so many things about the future in 1949.

Towards the end you really get creeped out by what happens to the main character.

June 4

@vogtteacherlib: #bookaday June 4: Read a couple Super Hero DK Readers and kept trekking through 1984 http://t.co/fbmp1mrI4A

Starting Book A Day

Hey I'm starting Book A Day. I will be recording my experience this summer here on my blog and Twitter. My twitter handle is @vogtteacherlib and I will use hashtag #bookaday.

Here's what it is. During summer vacation I will be reading at least one book everyday.

I am doing this as a part of my goal for the fall. If I ask my students to be "wild readers" I need to show and practice it as well.

From time to time I will also post pics of this little adventure.

This idea came from Donalyn Miller (@donalynmiller) a teacher and author. There are other teachers and librarians who are also setting this as a goal this summer. Check out Nerdy Book Club online or follow them on Twitter.
